Dog Struck with Bat While Protecting a Child Recovering From Surgery

On October 8th, 2016, Dallas DogRRR received a call from a shelter volunteer regarding a dog brought in that was in need of desperate help. Within 40 minutes, Falkor was picked up from the shelter and en route to the emergency vet.

Falkor was struck several times by a bat while protecting a child. It is hard to believe someone could commit such a horrendous act.

When Falkor arrived at the emergency vet, it was determined he faced major obstacles due to swelling of the brain. The swelling prohibited the medical team from taking immediate x-rays or starting surgery.

The next morning, x-rays were taken. It was determined Falkor suffered a broken jaw, broken teeth, would need to have his right eye removed and was blind in the left eye due to swelling. Additional, Falkor had a frontal lobe of skull was broken, eye socket fractured, and swelling of the brain. It was too early to tell if Falkor would suffer from brain damage.

Once Falkor was stable, he had reconstructive surgery on his jaw. His jaw was wired and screws were set in place. The wire will be removed in 3 months after it has healed.

After Falkor’s jaw surgery, the next surgery would be his eye. Luckily, as the swelling went down in his head, 100% vision was restored to his left eye. Unfortunately, his right eye socket was tremendously infected.  After an appointment with an ophthalmologist, it was determined that Falkor would need to have eye surgery, which was a major success.

During Falkor’s eye surgery, the doctor discovered he has cancer in his scrotum. A few days after the cancer was discovered, the doctors fully removed the cancer from his scrotum.

Throughout his surgery, his disposition, according to volunteers and the entire medical team, was very sweet and docile.

On October 19th, 2016, just 11 days after Falkor experienced the worst of humanity, he left the vet to go to his new foster home. He will return for check-ups on his jaw and eye in the next few weeks.

This courageous senior is lucky to be alive.

Throughout his surgery, his disposition, according to volunteers and the entire medical team, was very sweet and docile.

Two days after Falkor started his new life wit his foster family, he had his first PTSD appointment with his trainer from Total K9 Focus.

From Falkor’s PTSD trainer: Never underestimate the unconditional love that dogs have for their humans! This handsome boy survived a brutal beating with a baseball bat, and is now living the life he deserves in a loving home. I worked with him today and despite the broken jaw that is now wired together, a caved in sinus cavity, fractured orbital bone, fractured skull, and a loss of his eye, he still wants to please. He will survive and love again.

The name Falkor was derived from the movie ‘THE NEVER ENDING STORY’–in the movie the luck dragon dog with eyes the color of rubies was optimistic, friendly, dignified, helpful and wise, trying to help the boy he protected in the movie and had him remember to “never give up and good luck will find you.”
